Bone Broth Fast

Lately I have not been making the best food choices. My sweet tooth has been insane and I haven’t bothered to try and stop from satisfying it. While I feel fine for the most part, I know that I can do better, I just need a jumpstart.

After doing a little research yesterday, I decided that I would try a bone broth fast. I already have kind of been doing intermittent fasting and wanted to try something a little more serious for a while now.

In my reading, I saw a lot of people had success with a 24 hour fast of bone broth and then breaking their fast with a smoothie of some sort. So I went to Heinens yesterday, grabbed some bone broth and the ingredients for a smoothie (maca, cashew milk, almond butter, flax seeds) and planned to start the next day (today 3/28).

I decided to keep a little journal during the day to track my reactions to the fast. I plan to do this for two days. 24 hours of bone broth fasting with a smoothie at 7 pm if I need it.

5 AM

I woke up feeling great and I headed to the gym for benchpress day. I usually work out fasted anyway so this wasn’t a big change.

6:45 PM

I am starting to feel a little bit of hunger. Just a twinge. I normally make my matcha latte around this time, but instead I warmed up some water and mixed in some matcha to give myself the anti-oxidant boost and little jolt of caffeine.

7:30 PM

I still feel pretty good as I get to work. I put on the electric kettle to make tea as per my usual routine.

8:30 PM

I am two cups of tea in. I feel a little twinge of hunger, nothing serious. I’ll probably have my first cup of broth in an hour or so.

10 AM

I’ve been really busy at work today and consequently, I am not really feeling any hunger. I can feel myself off though.

11 AM

Made my first cup of bone broth. Added two scoops of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides for extra protein. It tastes delicious. I love how salty it is. Feels good to drink something warm too.

12 PM

I decided not to go into the lunchroom because since I wasn’t eating, it didn’t make sense to go sit in there and I had a book I wanted to read, so I stayed put at my desk.

1:30 PM

Getting a few hunger pangs. Decide to push through and wait another half hour to make another cup of broth.

2:00 PM

Make my second cup of broth and go set up the Facebook Live we are doing for work. It’s still salty and delicious.

3:30 PM

Start to feel a twinge of a headache come on. I warm the last of my broth. 31 ounces in total consumed.

4:30 PM

I feel really good as I get home, not hungry at all really, but also excited to have the smoothie that I am planning to break my fast.

6:30 PM

I tried to wait until 7 PM to make the smoothie but I couldn’t wait any longer. I make a Maca smoothie with dates, flax seeds, cashew milk, cinnamon, and almond butter. It tastes like an oatmeal cookie and I am loving drinking something other than broth.

9:00 PM

I settle into bed to read and don’t feel hungry at all. I actually feel really good. I end up falling asleep really fast and my stomach feels great.

Day Two

6:30 AM

I decided not to workout this morning. I might do it when I get home today after work, but I still have some pain in my neck from whatever I did this weekend to mess it up so I am trying to take it easy.

7:00 AM

I make a little shot of matcha in hot water just to partially stick to my routine. I miss my matcha latte a little today, but I know I don’t need it.

8:00 AM

I am a little hungry at work. I can feel the pangs a bit so I make myself a cup of Earl Grey tea and it helps stave off the hunger a bit.

11:30 AM

Very busy morning at work again. I am just now having my first cup of bone broth. Tastes great still, but am starting to crave some real food.

12:30 PM

I work through lunch to distract myself from the fact that I am kinda hungry.

1:30 PM

I have my second cup of bone broth but I can feel my stomach rumbling for real food.

2:30 PM

I start to break my fast. I eat a small pack of pistachios because I don’t want to totally shock my system when I eat a real dinner tonight. It’s nice to have to chew things. Haha.

3:30 PM

I have my finally little half cup of bone broth. It goes down fast. I’m getting excited to eat a real meal tonight.

6:30 PM

I had my first meal, pork tenderloin and charred broccoli. It tasted AMAZING. But I couldn’t really eat a lot of it. After a small-ish protion I was pretty full.

Week After Update:

Full-disclosure, this has been sitting in my Google Drive for the last few days because I was being lazy, but I am kind of glad that it worked out that way because now I can give you an updated.

First thing is first, my skin looks incredible. It’s glowy and blemish free and just generally is living it’s best life. My hair is also doing better too. It’s more shiny and less oily. Don’t know if that’s from the broth, but I will take it.

Finally, I haven’t really been that hungry over the last five days. I haven't’ been eating until around 12 PM and when I have been eating, I haven’t wanted to eat a lot. It’s been kind of a nice change after the ravenous sugar cravings and seemingly never-full stomach.

Overall, I am really glad I did the fast and I plan to continue to do it throughout the mornings with maybe a day committed to a full on fast a week. It’s been a nice reset and I am loving how it is making me feel. Bone Broth for the win.
